Holidays and Celebrations in March – Some Fun, Some Unusual and Some Strange
There are a few celebrations that always fall in March. St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring are two such observances. Easter generally falls in March as well. But the good times and celebrations do not have to be limited to these few holidays. There are fun, and sometimes quirky, celebrations to be had every single day in the month of March.
So take a long look at the calendar below and pick out some fun days in March to celebrate and enjoy life!
March's Monthly Observances
Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month – Although a guinea pig is not the cuddliest of critters, they can have a lot of personality. I had one while in college, and every time he heard the refrigerator door open he started making quite a racket because he wanted carrots. Even though he was housed in my bedroom, he learned to associate the refrigerator door opening with receiving carrots. I think that is pretty darn amazing! My roommates, however, thought it was pretty darn annoying!
Exotic Winter Fruit & Leeks and Green Onions Month - Click on this link and learn about the tamarillo, the feijoa, red bananas, kiwano melon and the guava. (They certainly sound exotic, don’t they?) There you will also find a recipe for Tropical Fruit Salad with Guava Sauce to fix and enjoy sometime during the month.
Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month – Science and Engineering are two fields that have not always had women as evenly involved in them as men. From 1980-1996, I worked for several different companies in their mechanical engineering departments as a CADD (Computer-Aided Drafting and Design) operator. In my last job, I designed systems in medical diagnostic equipment. Within the departments that I worked, most of the time guys made up 90-95% of the engineering personnel. Girls can do it too!
Humorists are Artists Month - A writer, humorous or not, is an artist. A comedian is an artist also. The acronym for this observance is HAAM - sounds like a good name to me, especially for a comedian. What about a clown? They are artists too! Do you want to learn how to be a clown?
National Color Therapy Month - There are actually 31 ways to celebrate the month of March - one for every single day of the month. Color has a big impact on us.
National Craft Month - I love crafting, but since I have started writing, I have run out of time to do it. Now I am just doing a different kind of craft - it is all creative. Craftster.org is a great crafter's website. Check it out for yourself. If you are looking fora great place to sell your craft items, check out Etsy! Crafts are also great to do with kids - check out these kid's craft projects.
Employee Spirit Month – We all would like to know that our bosses care about how we feel, but we all also know that that is not always true. Print out the article and slip it under their door - anonymously! They may or may not read it, but at least you tried.
National Caffeine Addiction Awareness Month - Are you addicted to caffeine? Do you use caffeine to help you get more done in days that are already too short to get everything done that needs to be done? Take a caffeine awareness quiz and see what you know and don't know about caffeine. Facebook even has a page dedicated to Caffeine Awareness Month.
Check out the video below!
In the video below, NBC's TodayShow talks about energy drinks which are very high in caffeine. The discussion also covers the phenomenon of "Toxic Jock Syndrome" cause by excessive amounts of caffeine.

National Collision Awareness Month – This particular celebration has me a little confused. I have been in a few accidents in my life; and I cannot even think of one where someone had to make me aware that it had happened. Maybe I’m just lucky, but I just somehow always knew when I had been involved in an accident. Read what Shawn Tucker from autotrader.com has to say about driving safely.
National Kite Month – This is a great way to utilize the windy days in March, and a great way to celebrate the birth of spring. NationalKiteMonth.org has some great tips to help you improve your kite flying techniques. Just imagine how much fun it could be seeing the wonder in a child's eye of a kite "magically" flying through the air.
National Talk to Your Teens about Sex Month – This is the time to have that talk with your teen. You know the one I am talking about … the one where you learn all the things you always wanted to know about sex but were too afraid to ask. Seriously though, if you need to address some of these issues with your child and don’t know where to start, click here for more information.
Daily Holidays and Celebrations
1 – National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day - Today is the day to celebrate what many people have - a lifetime love affair with peanut butter. To celebrate this day, get you taste buds going with a recipe using peanut butter.
2 – Dr. Seuss Day – Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday! Celebrate it by visiting Seuss Ville. You could have some fun today by adding green food coloring to your scrambled eggs and making green eggs and ham, and see what the family says. After all, I would not want to be sued. But, today is Dr. Seuss Day, so share one of your favorite Dr. Seuss books with a special child in your life, or consider sharing a craft with them.
3 – If Dogs and Cats Had Opposable Thumbs Day – We really do not want our furry four-legged friends, the dogs and cats in our lives, to have opposable thumbs. Imagine all the things they could then do for themselves. These lovable creatures may not adore us as much if they could open a can or a bag, or get a treat out of a jar. Think about it.
4 – Courageous Follower Day - This day is set aside to acknowledge that followers are very important. Without followers, there would be no leaders. I want to thank all the courageous followers who have made this journey so much more than it would have been without them. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
5 – Fun Facts About Names Day or Namesake Day - Did you know there are 99 different ways to observe this day?!? Try out the Random Name Generator! Or take a peek at "What's Your Name's Hidden Meaning?" quiz. Want to know the history of your name? Don’t like what you found out about your name? For just 39.95 you can change your name and become someone else – if only it were really that easy!
6 – Oreo Cookies Day – On this day in 1912, Oreo cookies went on sale for the first time. Celebrate by making one of these Oreo Cookie recipes. Yum!
Check out the short OREO video below.
7 – National Be Heard Day - If you are the owner of a small business, then this is the holiday for you. Created by Shannon Cherry, the intent of this day is to help entrepreneurs, small business owners and solo professionals find their voice, tell their story and be heard.
8 – National Crabmeat Day – Yum! I absolutely love crab! Do you have a hankering for crab? If the answer is a resounding yes, then click here for well over three dozen recipes using crabmeat. And click here to check out 20 fun facts about the blue crab.
9 – Panic Day! - Join Chicken Little in letting everyone know the sky is falling and see if they buy into your theory! You definitely want to check out 20 Ways to Get the Most Out of Panic Day! I like number 7, "Phone in “well.” Call your boss and tell him or her that you feel too darn good to come in to work today, even though it’s a fib. That way you won’t appear to be a victim."
10 – International Day of Awesomeness - Although this celebration is in March, it originated on August 6, 2007. That is strange but true. Here is a day that we can all get into - a day filled with awesome people and awesome activities. The first and easiest way to celebrate this day is to be awesome! If you are a writer with a blog, create a tribute to someone you think is awesome! Think of something awesome that you can do for someone else and then do it! That alone will make you awesome and the circle will repeat.

11 – Johnny Appleseed Day - Celebrate Johnny Appleseed day by doing activities with the kids that will be educational as well. Remember the old adage, An apple a day keeps the doctor away. This would be a good day to put this adage into practice. Make a gorgeous dried apple wreath or centerpiece. Directions can be found by clicking here. it is a lovely way to add a delicious scent to your home.
12 – National Workplace Napping Day – This day is really pretty self explanatory, that is unless you are talking to your boss; and then you might have quite a bit more explaining to do!
13 – Donald Duck Day - If you have always been a big Donald Duck fan this is the day to let everyone know how you feel about the loveable duck who came into existence in 1934! This may not be the best day of the year to have duck on the menu.
Below is a video of a Donald Duck show from 1944! It will surely make you smile!
And another amusing one from 1945.
14 – Potato Chip Day - Greasy Goodness! Think you know everything there is to know about potato chips? Check out 10 Things You Didn’t Know and see how potato chip savvy you are. Eat some potato chips to celebrate this day! Me? I will be eating "salt and vinegar" chips myself!
15 – True Confessions Day - Confession is good for the soul, and often times good for a laugh! Go into work today and tell all those deep dark secrets. Or better yet, stay home and share all those secrets with your mirror. By staying home, you might still have a job tomorrow!
16 – Lips Appreciation Day – Do something for your lips today – test out a few other lips and see what you think. You might want to make some lip balm first to make yours lips "puckerably" soft!
17 – St. Patrick’s Day and National Green Beer Day– Green beer and St. Paddy’s day seems to go hand in hand. So celebrate this special holiday in honor of St. Patrick by drinking a pint of green beer.
18 –National Buzzard Day – This is a great holiday to honor some old buzzard who has managed to make your life more memorable … or was that miserable. Make a card for them or send them an email wishing them everything that they deserve (you might leave the details to their imaginations) on this special day set aside just for them.
19 – Swallow's Return Day - This day is observed as being the traditional return of swallows to San Juan Capistrano.
20 – Snowman Burning Day or Alien Abduction Day – I could not decide which of these to choose so I decided to include both. They were both so fun and crazy! For Snowman Burning Day I guess you would kind of have to plan this one in advance and then pray that it snows. The best way I would think to plan for this one would be to build a wooden platform on legs. The platform should be large enough to hold your snowman. Next arrange your wood under and around the platform so that it will be ready to burn when the time comes. You might even want to include a stake next to the platform to tie your snowman to. Wouldn’t want him to run away too quickly, would we? When things start getting hot, he’ll be running quickly enough! This day being the first day of Spring is probably why everyone chooses to torture the poor innocent snowman.
I would think that Alien Abduction Day, also known as Extraterrestrial Abduction's Day would be a great day to get rid of those people that are really a pain. (Does an old buzzard come to mind?) All you need to do is contact an alien and make arrangements for the abduction. But make sure the alien understands that the abducting needs to happen on this day so that you have a valid excuse. This is an excellent way to eliminate those who are a pain in the you-know-what because very rarely are any clues left behind. I have a special name for people who are a pain in the you-know-what – PITA (Pain In The A).
21 – Kick Butts Day – if you didn’t have any luck with the alien abduction scenario, it just might be time to kick some butt. Turn the tables on them and show them just where they have been a pain for you … in the you-know-what.
22 – International Goof-off Day - This is the day to goof off, but only if you will not get into trouble for doing so. Sleep late! Indulge yourself in a hobby!
23 – National Puppy Day - This has to be my most favorite day of the month. Puppies are wonderful and so much fun. They grow up absolutely too quickly. You do not want to miss the opportunity to click here and here to see lots of pictures of adorable puppies.
24 – National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day - Make some homemade chocolate covered raisins for yourself.
Watch the video below to see how to make chocolate covered raisins.
25 – National Pecan Day - Did you know that pecan trees are the only nut tree that is native to North America? Pecans are used in many different ways in recipes. Pecans have even been shown to contain antioxidants which help reduce the threat of cancer.
26 – Make Your Own Holiday Day - If you are feeling left out because you were not brave enough to celebrate February 1st, now is your chance to do it all over. If you have a special holiday that you would like to repeat and you can talk someone into doing it with you, then have a wonderful holiday – just the two of you, especially if it is February 1st. What a day to enjoy together!!! If you are still wondering what to do, check out this list!
27 – Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day - There really have been some quirky country music songs. Consider this one - "Get Your Tongue Outta My Mouth 'Cause I'm Kissin' You Goodbye" or "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly".
28 – Weed Appreciation Day - Have you hugged your weeds today? Did you know that there are many edible weeds? Eating weeds could be a great way to reduce your food budget.
29 – Mule Day - Mule Day is a day set aside to celebrate all things mule, plus traditional Appalachian food, music, dancing and crafts.
See videos below for Appalachian music and dancing.
30 – Browner on the Other Side of the Fence Day -This day has been set aside to honor all of those who did not fall for the greener grass on the other side of the fence. On this day we honor those who have remained committed even when times are rough.
31 – National Love our Children Day and Coloring Crayola Day - These two holidays would appear to go hand in hand so I have chosen to include both of them. Check out the official Crayola coloring page for coloring pages, craft ideas, games and fun. Pick a project to enjoy with a little one that you love. Let them know you love and care about them.
What a great way to end our celebrations and holidays in March - with a child. Share the wonder of a child today! We can learn much from a child about how to truly enjoy life!
Pick a few holidays to enjoy this month and celebrate March like you never have before!

Wow - all sorts of good ways to enjoy March. Craft Appreciation Month and Color Appreciation Month are my favorites. Snowman Burning Day?! Poor snowman.
I found my day on this calendar. Mmm.. Peanut butter day. This is cute and creative. Well done!
I want to celebrate take a nap at work day!! Unfortunately, I think horrible things could happen in my classroom if I did this! (Unless I could convince all the students to nap, too! Hmmmm....)
Dr. Seuss Day is my favorite March holiday...my little sister would disagree...her birthday is March 5!
well I am impressed .. I love St. Patrick day and Easter but I didn't know about the other holidays..great hub..

I think the Collision Awareness had to do with the awareness of how easily they can happen and how often they actually happen - in an effort to get people to more actively pay attention to the other drivers (as I as a pedestrian assume for my own safety that drivers can't see me so I don't just start crossing the street when I have the right of way but instead look for bad drivers first)
As for individual days:
I love Donald Duck and chocolate covered raisins the best (13th and 24th).
So nice to hear that there is a day when I should panic.
I'll have to tell Mom her birthday is Lips appreciation Day.
Though people in Nepal have different calender marked with entirely different holidays, I enjoyed reading this.
Awesome hub! You put a lot of work into this. March is my favorite month. St. Patrick's Week (I'm celebrating all week long this year!), tournament time, and my birthday all in one fun month!
March madness, plus the Oreo Cookie day are my favorites, the March of dimes are close too. Dr. Seuss birthday brings me memories.. Will book mark and will have to come back. This is an excellent hub!! Thanks for sharing.
LORD
Okay: I can...I give permission to be abducted!
Who knew that March was "adopt a rescued guinea pig month" -- not that I would ever consider such a thing, but what a great hub and how about all possible reasons to celebrate without even mentioning St. Patricks Day LOL this is sooooo much fun. Voting up and funny of course
It's almost March, so I am SHARING this one today! I just wish I'd been born a day later - I could really handle Workplace Napping Day!
What an impressive list! Woulda been handy when my kids were at home! But a National Take a Nap at Work Day? Who knew?? lol! ;D
Voted up, useful and awesome!
Cindy ~ Please tell me that you made some of these days up???? What? You didn't? No way! Seriously? Well all be damned!!! Some of these celebrations are hysterical. March is my favorite month! And no wonder: Oreos are celebrated. Oh yeah, and the 30th is my birthday; that's the best reason to love March. ;)
Don't forget to beware the ides of March!
